AI to augment rather than replace jobs, says Microsoft president
Microsoft president Brad Smith has said that artificial intelligence will augment rather than replace jobs, and that the technology is doomed to fail if it is used to replace workers.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Smith said that AI should be used to enhance human capabilities and create new opportunities, rather than to automate jobs out of existence.
“The future of work is not about AI replacing humans, but about AI augmenting humans,” he said. “If we use AI to replace workers, we are doomed to fail. But if we use AI to empower workers, we can create a better future for everyone.”
Smith also emphasized the importance of ethical AI development and called for greater collaboration between governments, businesses, and civil society to ensure that AI benefits all people.
Balancing innovation and responsibility
As AI technologies continue to advance rapidly, there is growing concern about their impact on employment and society. Smith acknowledged these concerns but argued that with the right policies and frameworks, AI can be a force for good.
“We need to balance innovation with responsibility,” he said. “That means investing in education and training, protecting workers’ rights, and ensuring transparency and accountability in AI systems.”
Microsoft has been actively developing AI tools designed to assist workers in various industries, from healthcare to manufacturing, aiming to improve productivity and job satisfaction.
Looking ahead
Smith’s remarks come amid increasing debate about the role of AI in the workplace. While some fear widespread job losses, others see AI as a tool to unlock human potential and drive economic growth.
“The key is to focus on how AI can complement human skills and creativity,” Smith said. “By doing so, we can build a future where technology and humanity thrive together.”
